An Information System is the means to transform pieces of data into information.
Information Systems use step-by-step methods and business rules to collect, process, and present data in a meaningful way that is understandable by people.
Information Systems consist of people, machines, and / or processes and can be either automated or manual.
Some examples of Automated Information Systems include:
- Customer Database Software Application
- Products / Inventory Database Software Application
- Accounting Software Application
- Spreadsheets containing formulas, lists of customers or products
Some examples of Manual Information Systems include:
- Paper files organized in a well-known manner
(in alphabetic order, by customer account number, etc.)
- Comic book subscriptions stored in boxes organized by customer name
