Information Management: What is Information Management?

Information Management is the transformation of information into knowledge.
This is done through the creation, organization, and handling of data in a way that allows for its efficient storage and retrieval.
Information Management helps small businesses standardize procedures. Standardization of procedures benefits:
- All Businesses:
- Improved customer satisfaction
- Improved employee satisfaction
- Seasonal businesses hiring new employees each year
- Growing businesses who need more productivity
- Mature businesses planning to eventually be sold
Information Management addresses the problem of finding and retrieving information stored in many different places:
- Paper-based data stored in traditional (paper) files
- Pieces of important information scattered on scraps of paper or notes stuck on a wall
- Electronic data for one customer stored in several files or folders
- Allow different "systems" to interact with, or "talk" to each other (such as Sales and Inventory)
Information Management helps small businesses customize the way they do things:
- Develop special pricing plans
- Control how customers are invoiced
- Control employee access to data
- Control customer access to data (for example: customers view their own order over the World Wide Web)
- Remind employees and customers about latest promotional items
